Scroll through the story of a family ministry using television, music, Bible translations, missions, and technology to help more people encounter Jesus.
1972/1973
A life changed on the road
Randy Weiss was on a honeymoon and record promotion tour with his new wife after a life marked by drugs and brokenness. On that trip, he read The Late Great Planet Earth, gave his life to Jesus, and went all in for ministry.
1974
Learning ministry from mentors
Randy began traveling with mentors, evangelizing, sharing the Gospel, and learning how to communicate Jesus with boldness and clarity.
Early 1980s
Behind the Iron Curtain--World Band Radio--& Television
Randy, his wife, and their children became part of dangerous international ministry work, helping smuggle Bibles and Christian media where the Gospel was restricted. The 1980's also brought more open doors for using world band radio to partner with others called to global ministry using radio as a powerful means to preach the Gospel. And the early 1980's also brought Randy's first efforts to use television to draw people to Jesus. In 1982, Randy's Green Socks music video was aired as commercials inside of various secular TV programs to offer people an opportunity to learn about Jesus. The early 1980's was also when Randy launched out as part of one of the earliest syndicated contemporary Christian music countdown radio programs called The American Christian Countdown (ACC) has had various hosts over the years. In its early iterations, each episode contained a 5-7 minute radio series with a new song weekly from one of Randy's albums, along with a brief ministry message related to the song. Randy's portion of the program was called The CrossTalkin' Corner.
Late 1980s
CrossTalkin' Corner
Some dear friends invited Randy to join them in developing a Christian country music TV program. Harry and Joanne Cash Yates (Johnny Cash's sister), along with Billy Anderson Jr., and Randy created wonderful series featuring many well-known country music stars who shared their music and their Christian testimonies in the series. Similar to Randy's earlier efforts in radio, each episode contained a 5-7 minute free-standing music video production that included one of Randy's new songs with a brief ministry message related to the song. These TV versions were also called The CrossTalkin' Corner. The late 1980's also saw Randy's music ministry expand with numerous new record albums and music videos produced in Nashville. And the opportunities also brought Randy to the stage of the Grand Ole Opry to perform on 9 occasions during the great Friday night Grand Ole Gospel shows at the Opry.
Early 1990s
The TV program begins
In 1994, CrossTalk became a nationally broadcast weekly television program through the work of Dr. Lester Sumrall and his family. By 1995 Randy and his son took over the production and distribution of the programs. It was a very humble undertaking taped in the living room of his house. A lovely bedsheet covered the wall behind the set to make it look like a studio instead of the white wall of their family's little living room. The effort required shooting each program at least twice because they only had one camera. To make it look like a multi-camera shoot took a lot of time, creativity, and chutzpah. After each program was finally taped, his son Caleb had to rush upstairs into the guest bedroom where the edit suite was stored. Every week, the program was put together, mastered, and the tapes shipped to satellite for that week's national broadcast. Nobody but our family knew this national program was just a guy and his high school kid son. Nevertheless, God was faithful!
Late 1990s
From local broadcast to global reach
The ministry grew. But Randy's wife evicted them from the house to do the productions. Soon, Randy and two of his sons (Caleb & Joshua) began working out of part of a rented church parsonage. That enabled Adrienne to come and go as needed from their house. When taping was being done in living room, Adrienne was required to take their other 5 children out of the house until taping was done. (Hence the eviction.) producing programs that aired locally and expanding to viewers internationally.
2000s
T.V , music, and a bigger vision
CrossTalk eventually moved into its own building with a studio, continuing to create Christian television programs and promote Christian music.
Early 2000s
The Today With God idea
The Today With God project began with a vision to license word-for-word dramatic Bible reenactments and turn them into bite-sized episodes hosted by Randy, helping viewers understand what they were watching.
Early 2010s
Spanish translation and Cuba outreach
The project was translated into Spanish and taken to Cuba on CDs with duplicators so believers could copy and share the Gospel in video form.
2010s
Curriculum, flash drives, and villages
CrossTalk, with the help of local churches, created curriculum, moved the project onto flash drives, and brought duplicators, mini projectors, and speakers into Cuba. Teams went door to door and village to village, showing the Gospel in people’s native tongue. thousands of people were saved as a result!
2023
India and a divine connection
With the Lord’s help, the project was completed in the top 11 languages of India. CrossTalk hosted a pastors conference and met the developer who would help turn the project into a mobile app.
